The fire started in a cabinet shop on First Avenue and burned for hours, consuming everything from the waterfront to Second Avenue. The rebuild was rapid and deliberately elevated — partly for drainage, partly to separate the business district from the tidal flats. The buried level was used intermittently for decades before falling into disuse.
✦Pioneer Square Above Ground
The neighborhood directly above the underground is itself worth exploring. Pioneer Square is Seattle's oldest neighborhood, with Romanesque Revival architecture built in the years following the fire. Occidental Square, the totem poles, and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are all within walking distance of the tour entrance.
✦What Remains Below
The preserved sections include original Victorian-era storefronts, tiled sidewalks, and cast-iron structural elements. The lighting is minimal and the ceilings are low in places — an accurate physical impression of what the street level looked like before the city climbed above it.
“Every landmark reveals a distinct soul when approached at ease—away from the rushed crowds and urban commotion.”
