The Paradise area, at 5,400 feet, is the park's most visited subalpine region. In summer, its meadows fill with lupine, paintbrush, and avalanche lilies against a backdrop of glacial snowfields. The Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center here offers panoramic Rainier views and detailed exhibits on the mountain's volcanic geology.
✦The Glaciers
Mount Rainier hosts 26 named glaciers — more than any other peak in the contiguous U.S. The Nisqually Glacier, visible from the main road, has receded significantly since 1900, offering an unintended lesson in climate science alongside the alpine scenery.
✦Sunrise and the Eastern Approach
At 6,400 feet, the Sunrise area is the highest point reachable by vehicle in the park. Open only in summer, it provides sweeping views of the Emmons Glacier — Rainier's largest — and on a clear day, the distant peaks of the North Cascades.
“Every landmark reveals a distinct soul when approached at ease—away from the rushed crowds and urban commotion.”
