Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway, follows the Skagit River through the park and provides access to most major trailheads. The river is one of the most important salmon and steelhead watersheds in Washington — bald eagle concentrations along the Skagit in winter are among the largest in the continental U.S.
✦Diablo Lake
The turquoise color of Diablo Lake is caused by glacial rock flour — finely ground mineral particles suspended in the water that refract light in the blue-green spectrum. The overlook on Highway 20 is one of the most photographed viewpoints in Washington, and the color is most saturated in early summer when glacial melt is at its peak.
✦The Cascadian Backcountry
The park's backcountry requires permits and preparation, but the front-country trails — Cascade Pass, Thunder Knob, and the Maple Pass Loop at the adjacent Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest — offer serious alpine terrain accessible in a single day.
“Every landmark reveals a distinct soul when approached at ease—away from the rushed crowds and urban commotion.”
